Our DE-Team held a “One-On-One Classroom Session” for the DE novice on Saturday February 7th 2015. The attendance was great and everybody that never participated in a HPDE (High Performance Drivers Education) got prepared for their first day on the track from start to finish.
They learned what they need leading up to the big day and how to do their best at the track.
The classroom focused on safety, success, car control, driving on the track, safe passing and first and foremost having FUN with the high performance cars. Advice was given about the Technical Inspection before the event and the Grid Inspection at the event. Also top off your gas, appropriate clothing, long pants, sneaker or street shoe with a thin flat rubber or crepe sole, sunscreen lotion, a baseball cap, glass cleaner and paper towels to clean your windows, a tire pressure gauge and last but not least extra motor oil.
Safety equipment like helmets, seat belts and seats were also covered as well as removing everything loose in the car the day before. A good advice was to make sure you get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast and lunch, and drink lots of fluid (e.g., water, Gatorade, etc.) to keep yourself hydrated. You need to know your limits. If you start to become fatigued, pull in and rest. A tired driver makes mistakes and is a hazard to himself and others. To drive at high speeds in a safe and controlled manner, everything has to be tuned for maximum performance, that includes car and driver.
At the end of the day everyone learned how to prepare themselves and the cars for a successful and fun DE-Day (05/09/2015).
Thank you DE-Team for this very interesting and informative session, thank you Howard for letting us use your facility and thank you Gilson MotorSports for sponsoring lunch.
