2012 Concours and Picnic

By Fred Young

With a mild winter and an early spring, it seems like the summer has been with us for months.  Many of our favorite events are already past or just ahead.  Our spring tour was a delightful drive in May and we ran another successful Club Race in June.  Parade in Salt Lake City will be about done by the time you read this and on July 14th we’ll have the Progressive Dinner. Then next month brings us to one of the premier events on the SEM/ PCA Calendar, the Concours and Picnic. This event features great food, (thanks to Denny and Sue Denyer), great fun, and the largest turnout of members and their fine cars.

This year should prove to be no exception. Here is a chance to share a meal with your fellow enthusiasts, showcase your car and see all the others. Trophies will be awarded in six classes of entries and for the People’s Choice. Everyone will have an almost equal chance of competing for a coveted trophy.

Of course, the prerequisite is washing, cleaning and polishing your car. Most of us will want to do that anyway at least twice a year at a minimum. Have one of those times coincide with the picnic, with the added incentive of a trophy for your efforts!  Best of all there is no extra charge to enter the concours; just sign up when you arrive.

Unofficially rumor has it that the PCA National Parade will be held in Traverse City, Michigan next year, June 23rd through June 29th. Our local concours will be help you prepare for entering the national competition. We would like SEM/ PCA to be well represented in that category.

The concours has been an integral part of our summer picnic for the last ten years and has drawn a good number of participants. So, our members have good reason to aspire to the national level and to “bring home the bacon” from Parade next year.  Anyone interested in competing will find a cadre of experienced club members willing and eager to share their experiences and expertise to help you prepare for the Parade concours. You may call Fred Young at (586) 566-3193 or e-mail him at frederickyoung@knpanel.com.  You will get personalized attention to help your cause. This includes an overview of the concours, classes to enter, what judges look for, and general helpful hints. Give the proposition some serious thought and please mark August 12th on your calendar for the concours at our club picnic.

We especially encourage new members to participate in this event and in all of our activities. “Older” or should I say, “longer term” members are always willing to lend a hand and offer advice, whether it is about driving, repairs, concouring or just helpful hints to make owning a Porsche more enjoyable. Don’t be bashful, step up and engage in conversation; we are all happy to help. Above all don’t miss out on sharing the passion for your car. See you soon.
