In Memoriam – Miles P. Smith
Miles was the 16 year old son of SEM/ PCA members Victoria Wade and Gretus Hoogestraat. Although only 16, Miles was already an avid fan Porsche and he was delighted to attend the 2013 Parade in Traverse City.
Like many of us, they arrived on Saturday and spend the day enjoying the sight of nearly nine hundred Porsches in one place. Following registration and a trip to the Goodie Store, Gretus and Miles joined a group of SEM/ PCA members for a delightful brunch on Sunday morning, at the Aerie restaurant, located on the 16th floor of the Grand Traverse tower.
Later they returned to their beachfront hotel and went swimming in the lake. Tragically, Miles, who was an accomplished swimmer with a backyard pool, drowned.
Miles was born on September 4, 1996 in Grosse Pointe, MI. He was a student at Roosevelt High School/Jo Brighton in Wyandotte, where he had recently completed 10th grade. He was proud to be a Special Olympic athlete; he played basketball, soccer, hockey, and swam. He also competed in snowboarding. Miles enjoyed traveling with his family, music, dancing, his team sports, and rollerblading.
The loss of a loved one is always sad, but the passing of a child is especially tragic. Our hearts go out to his mother, Victoria and her husband, Gretus Hoogestraat, Miles’ Dad.
As you can appreciate, this is an extremely difficult time for the family. Consequently, the BBQ and Tour which Gretus and Victoria had planned to host on August 18th has been deferred to at least next summer.
Memorial contributions to the Jo Brighton Special Athlete Fund, 4460 18th Street, Wyandotte, MI 48192 would be appreciated.
